Sanctions for people who drop litter on street

The persons that will be caught throwing litter in the street will be sanctioned. The Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca asked the municipal police to step up measures and check the areas more frequently so as to caution the people against dropping litter. According to the mayor, the residents of the capital city that need to transport large volumes of rubbish, including construction waste, must enter into a contract with the “Motor-Sanitation” Division. Otherwise, he says, the police would have to start legal cases and punish the ones that commit such offences. Chirtoaca also says that the inhabitants must be involved in the works of cleaning the city. He exemplified with the town of Minsk, where rubbish bins can be found only in stations and near residential blocks, but nobody drops litter on the street. According to the mayor, the “Motor-Sanitation” Division has modified the refuse removing timetable and promises to transport the rubbish more effectively out of the municipality of Chisinau. At the same time, the municipality intends to modify the sanitary norms and tariffs for taking the rubbish away so as to optimise the service. Currently, the tariff for this service includes the norm of 1 cubic meter per resident each year and this is unreal. The volume of refuse accumulated in Chisinau municipality has doubled in the recent years, from one to two cubic meters per inhabitant yearly, especially because of the large number of glass bottles, plastic packages and food remains. About 3 500 -3 700 cubic metres of refuse are taken out of the city each day. This is by 1 000 cubic metres more than projected.
