Sales of wood increase even if over half of villages are gasified
Though over 56% of the villages in Moldova were connected to the gas supply system, the volume of wood needed for heating has increased constantly during 5 years, by almost 63,000 cubic meters. According to the information provided by “Moldsilva” Agency for Info-Prim Neo, over 377,000 cubic meters of wood for heating have been sold in 2011.
The market price of wood until 2011 was 340-400 lei per cubic meter of oak tree, while in 2011 – 390-450 lei per cubic meter of oak tree. The rise in prices followed the increase in fuel and lubricant prices in the period, especially in autumn, when the trees for wood are being cut with machines that consume fuel. “Moldsilva” said that the largest quantities of wood are bought in October – March, with the acacia being the most popular type of tree.
The money earned from selling wood for heating is used to perform annual forestry works, including developing and protecting the forest fund. The forests occupy 11.4% (374,500 ha) of Moldova’s territory, but the areas are projected to be extended to 15% until 2020.
According to a study made by the ENPI FLEG Program in cooperation with “Moldsilva”, 2.32 cubic meters of wood on average are consumed annually in southern Moldova, 1.27 cubic meters in the central areas, and 0.74 cubic meters in the northern districts. The largest part of the wood - 74% - is used for heating. The wooded areas increase by almost 1,200,000 cubic meters yearly. But Moldova faces a shortage of energy resources.
Over 438,000 cubic meters of wood were collected in 2006, while in 2011 – almost 495,000 cubic meters, by over 55 cubic meters more. “Moldsilva” experts said the trees must be cut before they grow old and lose their functional qualities and can be used only for heating.
