Sales in Moldova's ICT sector amount to billions of lei
The information and communication technology (ICT) sector in Moldova during the last few years has developed steadily. Ten years ago, only one person in 100 had a personal computer, while last year - every third family, Info-Prim Neo has learned from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.
According to the quoted source, about 20,500 persons work in Moldova's ICT sector at present. They receive an average monthly pay of 6,000 lei. In 2009, the sales in the sector totaled 6 billion lei, while the exports of services – US$116 million, in contrast to US$16 million in 2001.
The fixed-line phone penetration rate last year was 31.7% (1.32 million people), while the mobile phone penetration rate – 76.1% (2.7 million). The subscribers to telephone-based Internet services constituted 0.6% of the country's population, to broadband Internet services – l4.6%.
According to the International Telecommunications Union' ICT Development Index, Moldova ranks 68th among the countries with an average ICT development index.
