Salaries of CC judges in focus of opposition and government

The judges of the Constitutional Court are the guarantors of the constitutionality of the Republic of Moldova. This is how the PAS MPs justify the vote in Parliament in favor of the rise in the monthly salaries of the constitutional judges up to 82,000 lei. For their part, the opposition MPs said the amendment that enabled to double the pays of CC judges was adopted without the Government’s appraisal, IPN reports.

The PAS MPs noted the higher salaries of CC judges will offer full independence to these judges so that they are not tempted to commit acts of corruption to the detriment of the state interests. The Constitutional Court is the most important institution in the state and the pays of its judges should be appropriate.

“Even if 30 years passed since the Independence was proclaimed, we are still at the incipient stage of rule of law building. The constitutional norms should work no matter what party rules. That’s why the six people from the Constitutional Court should get decent pays as they will this way have absolute independence. It does not go to political corruption as the terms in office of the CC judges do not have the same length as the Parliament’s mandate. The Constitutional Court is the guarantor of the country’s constitutionality,” PAS MP Oazu Nantoi stated in the talk show “Key Issue” on NTV Moldova channel.

The opposition says the amendment that led to the doubling of the pays of CC judges wasn’t endorsed by the Government, which gave a negative appraisal.

“The Government’s appraisal of this amendment is negative. How could you adopt an amendment with a negative appraisal from the Government? I’m curious to see how the CC judges act if someone challenges this amendment in the Constitutional Court as these provisions refer to them,” said the MP of the PCRM-PSRM Bloc Grigore Novac.

After an amendment to the draft budgetary-fiscal policy signed by PAS MPs Olesea Stamate, Veronica Roșca and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu was passed, the salaries of the judges of the Constitutional Court were raised from 44,000 to almost 82,000 lei.
