“Saint Lazarus” Cemetery could be extended again

The local authorities intend to extend the area of the Chisinau Cemetery “Saint Lazarus”, which is the largest cemetery in Europe. According to the director of the municipal company “Funeral Services Complex” Ludmila Botan, the area of the cemetery, which is now of 103 hectares, was extended by two hectares during several years, IPN reports.

In the February 6 meeting of officials of Chisinau services and divisions, Ludmila Botan said there are no more burial places at this cemetery. About 5,000 people are buried there annually and 18 to 38 persons daily. The cemetery is relatively young as it has only 52 years, but is already cramped.

The proposal to extend the cemetery is to be approved by the Chisinau Municipal Council.

On the territory of Chisinau municipality, there are 11 cemeteries.
