Russia’s arguments for terminating economic agreements with Moldova are unfounded, opinions

The arguments provided by Russia as regards the necessity of terminating the economic agreements with Moldova in order to prevent the re-export of European goods are groundless, said experts invited to the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Doctor of International Law Nicolae Osmochescu said the possible annulment of the bilateral agreement runs counter to the international legislation and to Russia’s laws, which provide that an international treaty can be terminated when one of the sides violates the provisions of this treaty. But Chisinau didn’t break these provisions by signing an Association Agreement with the European Union. “I consider Moscow attempts to deviate from the international economic norms. Moldova will have the right to appeal to different international organizations and tribunals to challenge the possible termination by Russia of particular accords,” said the expert.

Doctor Habilitate of Politology Victor Juc said that Russia’s actions were predictable and it is not excluded that it will demand suspending agreements signed by Moldova within the CIS. “It’s not so easy to annul an accord signed within the CIS. If this happens at Russia’s request, this will meant he Commonwealth’s fall,” he stated.

In another development, the expert said that Russia should have no objection to Moldova’s association with the EU at a time when it is a CIS member as Russia itself forms part of several international organizations of the kind concomitantly.

Ion Leahu, ex-member of the Joint Control Commission, said the Kremlin authorities are not interested in negotiations with Chisinau and it’s not excluded that Moscow will take new trough decisions, including the imposition of restrictions on migrant workers from Moldova before the parliamentary elections.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia should take immediate measures to defend the market from the invasion of European goods following the signature and ratification by Moldova of the Association Agreement with the EU. One of the Russian Deputy Prime Ministers proposed that some of the accords signed by Moldova within the CIS should be terminated for the same reason.
