Russian official considers Transnistria’s recognition as likely

Vice speaker of the Russian State Duma, Serghei Baburin, considers that Transnistria might gain international recognition this very year. Attending the celebrations of the so-called nistrean republic’s independence, Baburin told Russian reporters that the referendum scheduled for September 17 will play a decisive role for Transnistria. According to the official, in spite of the statements coming from the West, it will be impossible to disregard the will of the region’s population. “Transnistria complies with all international standards to become an independent state. Having Montenegro’s independence recognized and Kosovo following up, the international community could stabilize the situation in Europe and in the region by recognizing the nistrean republic”, Russian vice speaker said. Two issues will be questioned by the Tiraspol’s authorities within the referendum: “Do you support Transnistria’s independence and a further adhering to the Russian Federation?” and “Do you support giving up to the independence and a further integration into the RM?”. Chisinau, Western countries, as well as international organizations labeled the referendum as illegitimate and declined its results in advance. On the other side, several Russian officials announced repeatedly that the referendum might be recognized by Moscow.
