Russia makes effort to maintain positions in Moldova and Ukraine, experts

Russia pursues an aggressive policy and is trying by all means to maintain its position in Moldova and Ukraine, said experts invited to the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Political analyst Anatol Taranu considers that Moscow aims to destabilize the situation in Ukraine and Moldova so that the two countries become federations and it is able to control the given region. “Russia is no longer a reliable partner of Moldova. I cannot say that it is an enemy, but it is not a friend either,” said the analyst.

As to the ban imposed by Russia on the import of meat products, he said that this is one of the actions taken by Moscow to intimidate Chisinau, but it will not affect Moldova’s economy.

Doctor Habilitate of International Relations Victor Juc believes that Russia wants to transform Moldova and Ukraine into its satellites. “The Crimea scenario is designed to destabilize the situation in the two states. Moldova is vulnerable to Moscow at economic and social levels,” he stated, adding that the problem can be solved by signing the Association and Free Trade Agreements with the EU as soon as possible.

“The Moldovans should learn from the experience of the Baltic Countries, which, for their part, resisted the pressure exerted by Moscow. The authorities can do nothing in this situation. It is now the problem of the people, not of the authorities. We must show discernment, be united and think about the hundreds of thousands of Moldovans working in Russia, who are exposed to the risk of being discriminated and ill-treated,” said the director of the European Institute for Political Studies Viorel Cibotaru. According to him, in the current situation the authorities should better think about the equipment of the national army.

Jurist Pavel Midrigan considers that by imposing embargos, Russia is violating the international law norms because only the UN has the right to impose bans. He criticized the government for not using the leverage it possesses in the created situation. He made reference to Moldova’s status of CIS member and to the bilateral agreements signed with Russia, which enable the producers to check the quality of products on the territory of the other state.
