Representatives of political parties and civil society have differing opinions about the incidents reported on the left side of the Nistru. The leader of the Party of Change Ștefan Gligor said the Russian Federation is the beneficiary of these tensions as it wants to concentrate troops on the border with the Transnistrian region so as to weaken Ukraine’s forces on the Eastern front. At the same time, representatives of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform”(PPPDA) said the situation is much more serious than President Maia Sandu presented it after the meeting of the Supreme Security Council, while Russia wants Moldova to be engaged in the war, IPN reports.
The leader of the Party of Change said neither Chisinau nor Kyiv or even Tiraspol want an escalation of the situation and cannot be the authors of the latest destabilization attempts witnessed in Tiraspol and Mayak.
“If we speak about the indecent at the so-called Security Ministry, the grenade launchers used there can belong only to the Russian Federation and the Transnistrian army. That attack looks like a badly organized provocation. Ukraine is not interested in having another hotbed in this war. The Republic of Moldova has modest military capacities and always said that it wants the conflict to be solved peacefully. I don’t think the Transnistrian region that includes businessmen who during tens of years made billions wants a war. The Russian Federation seems to be the beneficiary of this destabilization,” Ștefan Gligor stated in the program “Freedom with Dorin Galben” on TV8 channel.
“We are concerned about the rather aggressive, bellicose messages posted by inhabitants from the left side of the Nistru on social media. Furthermore, from military viewpoint, the left side of the Nistru is better equipped than the national army because there is an ammunition depot in Cobasna. That depot hasn’t been monitored by anyone since 2004,” said the director of Promo-Lex Association Ion Manole.
Former Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Alexandru Flenchea said the official Chisinau communicates insufficiently with the big players that are directly or indirectly involved in this war. Moldova poassively follows the develooments in its immediate vicinity.
“The stake of these events is not the Transnistrian region, but the Republic of Moldova that they want to be engaged in the war. What I would like to see is intense communication of the Republic of Moldova with the neighboring countries and the development partners. What if the Russian troops reach the zone known as south Bessarabia? Communication with Kyiv and Bucharest is needed. What would Romania do in such a situation as a NATO member? We witness an attempt to reshape the borders of Europe and the Republic of Moldova is not a player, but just a piece,” stated Alexandru Flenchea.
Ex-MP of PPPDA Kiril Moțpan said the scenario of the last few days is similar to that of 1992, when the way was paved by multiple provocations that later led to a war.
“I don’t think President Maia Sandu’s deception as “settling of an old score between groupings in the Transnistrian region” is accurate. It is just an attempt to calm the citizens down. I consider the developments in the Transnistrian region are grave. It is just the beginning. These events remind of 1992. The then conflict didn’t start out of the blue. It was prepared beforehand,” stated Kiril Moțpan.
President Maia Sandu on April 26 convoked the Supreme Security Council over the incidents reported in Tiraspol and Mayak. She said the situation in the Transnistria region was created by warlike groups from inside the region whose goal is to escalate the situation and to involve the Republic of Moldova in the war. The Supreme Security Council recommended the public institutions to step up traffic inspections near the Security Zone, inside the country and on the border.
