Russia does not have legal right to intervene in Transnistria, opinions

From legal viewpoint, Russia does not have the right to intervene now in the Transnistrian region, as it did in Crimea. But, taking into account the behavior of the Transnistrian and Russian leaders, these actions are a warning for Moldova. The issue was discussed in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Constitutional law expert Teodor Carnat said there are Russian military bases both in Crimea and in Transnistria. “Russia took over Crimea by military aggression. It can easily mobilize its military forces and take over Transnistria too. But I don’t think it will do it,” he stated.

Journalistic Ion Terguta considers that Russia does not renounce the Transnistrian region, but will not intervene now in this territory. It will focus on the problems it caused in Crimea.

Political analyst Anatol Taranu said that Moscow does not need now a new conflict area that will distract its attention from Crimea. The Russians will turn their attention to Transnistria when they deal with all the problems that appeared in Crimea.

Vlad Turcanu, spokesman for President Nicolae Timofti, said that in the created situation Moldova must sign the Association Agreement with the EU as soon as possible and must hasten all the processes for integrating into the EU.

In a duplex between Publika TV and Realitatea TV, former foreign minister of Romania Adrian Cioroianu said the Transnistrian region is the main weak point of Chisinau in the relations with the EU. “Moscow does not need this region outside Moldova’s borders. Russia wants greater federalization of the former territories of the USSR,” he stated.

Another Romanian foreign minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu said the hastening of Moldova’s accession to the EU is a necessary and urgent condition. “What Russia does in Ukraine today is perfect appropriation of territory. Nothing is safe now, at least in Eastern Europa. Russia’s actions in Crimea represent only the eye of a cyclone that covers several countries of the region. Unfortunately, we enter again a cold war. We are in 1949,” he added.

The Crimean peninsula decided to separate itself tom Ukraine and to join Russia. The international community is against it and accuses Russia of causing this situation. In the context of the uncertain regional situation, Transnistrian officials called on Russia to analyze the opportunity of joining Transnistria to its territory.
