Considerable investments were made in 2013 in renovating and modernizing social infrastructure. Rural development expert Vasile Munteanu said that owing to investment projects and access to loans, the life in villages improved, but not enough for keeping the Moldovans at home. It’s true that in many settlements the people do no longer convey water from wells as they have running water, but a lot is yet to be done to prevent them from going abroad.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, about 32,000 households were connected to water supply and sewerage services. Gheorghe Curmei, division head at the State Road Administration, said that over 100 km of roads have been rehabilitated this year. The share of the national roads in good and partially good state rose from 39.4% in 2009 to 79.2% in 2013.

Anatol Usatyi, director of the Road Rehabilitation Project of the Moldova Millennium Challenge Fund, said that 60 km of the Saratenii Vechi - Soroca national road were repaired in 2013. This road goes through 14 settlements. The project also includes small local roads. For example, in Ghindesti village of Falesti district, there was rehabilitated the road that connects the village’s center and the national road. In Tantareni, Telenesti, there was repaired the access road to school, while in Branzenii Noi there was reconstructed the road going to the secondary school.

Expert Vasile Munteanu forecast that 2014 will not differ much from 2013. The foreign partners will also provide assistance and make investments. For the people in villages to feel the improvements, the government should maintain the social-political stability. Otherwise, the efforts will be fruitless.
