Ruling alliance proposes direct presidential vote

The ruling Alliance for European Integration (AEI) decided to submit to the Constitutional Court for consideration a proposal to amend Article 78 of the fundamental law introducing direct election of the president. The decision was adopted by the four-party AEI at a joint meeting with the Cabinet of Ministers on Friday evening, Deputy Prime Minister Victor Osipov has told Info-Prim Neo. At the same time, the opposition Party of Communists recently announced their proposal concerning the presidential election, suggesting it should take part in Parliament in a three-round system, instead of the two rounds as currently stipulated in Art.78. According to the opposition party, the third round would allow for the possibility to elect the president with a simple majority, or 51 votes, as opposed to 61 votes required at present. The Communists Party also submitted its proposal to the Constitutional Court. Until Friday the AEI has never met in such an extended format since incorporation. Although no specific decision was adopted concerning the dissolution of parliament and holding of early elections – on which the opposition and the international community insist – this is exactly what the AEI’s proposal implies.
