Romanian referendum did not pass

The referendum on Romanian President Traian Basescu’s dismissal was declared invalid. According to the Central Electoral Bureau, the turnout was 46.13%, whereas 50%+1 were necessary for the referendum to pass. 87.55% of the people present at the referendum voted for the dismissal of Traian Basescu, reports Info-Prim Neo. The data were presented after centralizing data from 97.52% of the polling stations, i.e. 18,089 polling stations out the 18,548 total. Sergiu Ostaf, head of the Resource Center for Moldovan NGOs for Human Rights (CReDO), who monitored the referendum participation rate on the territory of Moldova, says that about 2,300 visited the voting booths, i.e. almost 1% of the Romanian citizens who reside in Moldova. The highest turnout was registered in Chisinau, and the lowest one in Soroca. The presence of at least 50% of all Romanian citizens was necessary for the validation of the referendum on the dismissal of Romanian President Traian Basescu.
