The Romanian President, Traian Basescu, announced that until the end of September the Romanian parliament will put forward two bills regarding Romanians from across the borders: a law concerning the Romanian citizenship and a draft taking into consideration the Romanians from other countries. Basescu has made the declaration at a summer camp organized by the Presidency of Romania for Romanian communities. According to the Romanian press, Basescu specified that the laws are intended to expedite the issuance of Romanian citizenship to all Romanian communities from neighbor states, so that they will beneficiate from Romania joining the EU. “We want to give the young people the possibility to have a double citizenship, to broaden the Romanian labor market, to offer advantages to studying in Romania” Basescu added. At the same time, the president announced that the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is ready to finance the projects of Romanians from across the borders. “If there is a lack of an independent press in Romanian language, lack of Romanian cultural centers all you have to do is write your own projects and give good reasons for the financial requests” the president stated. In the meeting with the young Romanians from abroad, Basescu deprecated Chisinau’s intentions to “mystify the history and culture from this country”. “We are outraged that Romanian is still not accepted, and the existence of a so-called Moldavian language is speculated. It is a pity that even today the history is misinterpreted. The Republic of Moldova is one of the few countries that is separated from its homeland and is still trying to misconstrue history” Basescu added. At the “Romanian communities and European identity” summer camp are present 300 young Romanians from Moldova (including Transnistria), the Ukraine, Hungary, Albany, Macedonia, Serbia and Bulgaria.
