Romanian MP seeks facilitation of procedure for regaining nationality for Bessarabians

Romanian MP Eugen Tomac suggests facilitating the procedure for regaining Romanian nationality for the Romanians from Bessarabia and Northern Bucovina, who lost is as a result of the Soviet occupation. The MP submitted a legislative initiative for amending and supplementing the Romanian Nationality Law to Parliament. He proposes instituting special conditions and procedures for enabling these citizens to regain the nationality, IPN reports.

The bill provides that the persons from Bessarabia and Northern Bucovina who lost the Romanian nationality as a result of the Soviet occupation will regain it within a month of the submission of the application, based on the civil status documents of that time.

The legislative initiative will be soon debated by the specialty commissions of the Senate. A final decision will be taken by the Chamber of Deputies.
