Romanian MEPs underlined the importance of the local general elections for Moldova’s European present and future. In a letter to the press, MEP Emilian Pavel, who opened an office in Chisinau, congratulated Moldova on its successful covering of the European course since the Vilnius EaP Summit of November 29, 2013 until now, saying it is indeed an important step for Moldova, IPN reports.
“Every time, the European Union showed its firm commitment to the Republic of Moldova. Now the Moldovans have the chance to show by vote that the future of this country is near the European citizens. As a member of the European Parliament, I state with confidence that the European course is the only viable course for Moldova and the citizens will definitely show this by active participation in this democratic process,” stated Emilian Pavel.
Victor Negrescu, president of the Party of European Socialists Romania, said the most important thing is for the people to take part in these elections and to show that they really support democracy and that the local interests deserve to be protected. “I urge the young people in particular to cast their votes as the thoughts and voices of the youth must represent Moldova’s future. In the local elections, in which we vote for those who represent us at the closest level to the people, as many young people with pro-European thinking as possible should take part,” he stated.
Deputy chairwoman of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Parliament Viorica Dancila said it is an important moment for the young people and all the residents of Moldova because what they do in the local elections will decide their future. “I think that in the polling booth, everyone should think what’s better for their family and children, while the young people should be confident that their life starts and this should be a pro-European life,” stated Viorica Dancila, adding she hopes the Moldovan people will choose a European path within which the values of democracy will be fully respected.
