Romanian language Day began in Chisinau with flowers laid at monuments

Representatives of local public administration from Chisinau, MPs, cultural personalities, representatives of political parties, NGO members have laid flowers in the morning of Thursday, August 31, at the monument of Stefan cel Mare si Sfant and at the monuments of the writers from the Alley of Classics on the occasion of celebration of the Romanian language Day. There were no representatives of the government at the site. Neither the Communist Party, nor the People’s Christian Democratic Party were present. Interim mayor of Chisinau Municipal Vasile Ursu declared he rejoices at the comeback to the national traditions – the Latin alphabet and to the language we speak – Romanian. Ursu stated that the Romanian language should be spoken with ever increasing clarity. It is a shame that the current generation has ignored this celebration and it’s unjust that graduates of non Romanian schools do not know the language of the majority of the population, Ursu stated. When requested to comment on the fact that no members of the central administration were present at the event, Ursu replied that he believes this holiday should be organized at local level. The president is on vacation, other high officials are probably on business trips, and there is no compulsion to take part in this event. Municipal Councilor Serghei Novic took part at the flower offerings and stated that he has Russian origins and speaks Russian, but lives in the Republic of Moldova, loves Moldovan music and songs. Romanian language day for him is the day of the language of his fellow countrymen. He couldn’t say why his party colleagues from the Parliament or the Government are not present, but suggested they could show up later on. “I don’t believe they will miss this celebration, they take part in it every year” Novic stated. The deputy from the Alliance Our Moldova, Veaceslav Untila, expressed his concern that the government ignores this holiday. He also stated that the good part is that this year Romanian language day is celebrated apart from Beer Fest. Romanian language day is a celebration of the rebirth of the traditions and cultural values of the Romanian kind from Basarabia, stated for Info-Prim Neo the municipal council of the People’s Democratic Christian Party Alexandru Corduneanu. When asked why the leaders of the PPCD party are not present, Corduneanu affirmed that he represents the leaders of his party. During the recital „Homage to the Romanian language”, several cultural personalities from the Republic of Moldova and Romania came to speak about the importance of this holiday for Moldovan citizens and for the Romanian nation at whole.
