Romanian judge in Chisinau: It’s not use having institutions if they do not work

The law enforcement bodies in Moldova do not work and are influenced politically, judge Cristi Danilet, who is a member of Romania’s Supreme Council of Magistrates, said in the conference “Anticorruption: Current situation and case study of Romania” that was organized by the Institute for European Policies and Reforms in cooperation with the Institute for European Politics of Berlin, IPN reports.

“It’s no use having institutions if they do not work. Democracy is based on independent justice. There are three pillars that lay at the basis of an independent legal system: the lawyers, the prosecutors and the judges. As long as the heads of the law enforcement institutions are named with the involvement of the political class, we cannot speak about independent justice. The fact that the appointment of some institution heads depends on Parliament is a problem,” said the Romanian judge.

Cristi Danilet called on the Moldovans to become more actively involved in the fight for an independent legal system. “The independence of justice is not a privilege of judges. It is a human right. The people must be those who struggle for the independence of justice,” he stated.
