Romanian Government simplifies citizenship granting procedure
The Government of Romania has simplified the procedure for granting Romanian nationality to the former Romanian citizens that gained Romanian nationality by birth or that lost it for reasons that cannot be imputed to them or their Romanian nationality was cancelled without their consent. At its Wednesday’s meeting, the Romanian Government adopted an emergency ordinance, amending the Romanian nationality law, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the press service of the Government of Romania.
“This emergency ordinance is aimed at simplifying the citizenship granting procedure on the one hand and at hastening and shortening certain terms stipulated in the present Romanian nationality law on the other hand (...). We offer all the Romanian citizens and their descendents up to the third degree the possibility of regaining the Romanian nationality by request,” Prime Minister Emil Boc said at the end of the Government’s meeting.
Under the normative document, the Romanian nationals and their descendents up to the third degree can regain or obtain Romanian nationality by request, by preserving the foreign nationality and settling in the country or maintaining the domicile abroad, if they meet the following conditions: show loyalty to the Romanian state by behavior, acts and attitudes and declare that they did not take and support and do not take and support actions against the order of law or the national security; turned 18; are known to have a good behavior and have not been sentenced in the country or abroad for an offence that makes them unworthy of being citizens of Romania.
The amendments to the nationality law eliminate the required interview that unjustifiably hindered the procedure for adopting the Romanian nationality. “As this applies to former Romanian nationals that held Romanian nationality as I said, the interview will be no more mandatory for verifying if they know the language or not. But this condition remains valid for other persons that have never had Romanian nationality but want to obtain it in accordance with the law,” Premier Emil Boc said.
The term for processing the application for nationality will be maximum five months of the day when the application is submitted, compared with at least six months earlier.
