Romanian Foreign Ministry asks for explanations about Romanians not allowed to enter Moldova

Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu told a news conference on Friday that he was concerned about the situation of the Romanians “systematically sent back” at the border with Moldova, announcing he expected explanations from his Moldovan counterpart, Info-Prim Neo quotes Mediafax. The Minister sent verbal notes to the Moldovan foreign ministry and is waiting for explanations from the Chisinau authorities. “I have asked for clarifications from the Moldovan Foreign Ministry about the reasons why Romanian citizens are systematical halted at the border with Moldova. We have expressed our concern and worry about how these citizens are treated. We won't go into a public dispute, there is also an electoral context that I don't want to comment,” Diaconescu said. The Minister opines a European citizen must be able to move free in Europe. “In the conditions when dozens of Romanian citizens were forced to get off the train without explanations, we want to know what is the explanation and what is expected from the Romanian authorities. We know it for sure what we expect: a cooperating spirit,” the minister added. Scores of Romanians claim they were sent back from the frontier with Moldova. The Chisinau authorities waver to comment the incidents, so far. Earlier, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry warned the Romanian side about “possible electoral actions, with a provocative character, in which Romanian citizens may be involved.” Romanian ambassador to Chisinau Filip Teodorescu was convened by the Moldovan Foreign Ministry on March 20, being told groups of Romanians citizens would come to Chisinau from March 26 to 28 to attend different election-related public activities.
