The fourth edition of the Romanian Film Days started in Chisinau with the screening of the movie “One step behind seraphs”, directed by Daniel Sandu, at the Odeaon Cinema in the evening of October 11. During the festival, the public in Moldova could see films made in Romania until October 14 inclusive, IPN reports.
Dumitru Grosei, chairman of the Independent Filmmakers Association of Moldova Alternative Cinema, said the festival continues the tradition of bringing the most appreciated Romanian films to cinemagoers in Chisinau. The films are classed into three sections: New Films, Focus and Retro. The organizers hope to establish particular relations for eventual co-productions during the event.
“We are in a special year, the Centenary Year, and I’m glad that we can enable the art lovers from Chisinau who appreciate film and filmmaking to have a contact with the youngest and most prolific film directors of the Romanian cinematography,” Valeriu Matei, director of the Romanian Cultural Institute “Mihai Eminescu” in Chisinau, told a news conference.
“One step behind seraphs” (2017) that opened the festival is the debut film of director Daniel Sandu. The feature film competed at the Sofia International Film Festival and this year won eight trophies at the Gopo Awards, including for the best film and best direction. The documentary “Infinite Football” (2018), which is the newest film of one of the most important authors of the New Romanian Cinema Corneliu Porumboiu, was shown the same evening.
On October 12, there will be screened short documentaries by Copel Moscu, namely “Evening classes” (1982), “On the banks of the Ozana” (1984), “The train comes to the station” (1988) and “I chose liberty” (1992), and also Constantin Popescu’s third feature film “Pororoca” (2017).
On October 13, Copel Moscu will give a masterclass on the documentary film in the digital epoch at the Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts. The same day, the Odeon Cunema will host the screenings of Ana Lungu’s new film “A prince and a half” (2018) and of Copel Moscu’s films “A day will come” (1985/1990) and “Naïve treasure” (2018) that was launched recently. The public in Moldova could also see Radu Jude’s newest film “I don’t care if we go down in history as barbarians” (2018).
On the last day of the festival, on October 19, there will be shown Lucian Pentilie’s film “Reconstitution” (1971) and Hadrian Marcu’s film “A decent man” (2017). The closing gala will include the screening of the newest film of Florin Șerban “Love 1. Dog” (2018), which hasn’t been yet launched in Romania and comes directly from the competition of the Sarajevo Film Festival. Bessarabian actor Valeriu Andriuță plays the main part and will be present in Chisinau for a discussion with the public.
Entrance to the screenings is free of charge. The Romanian Film Days in Chisinau are organized by the Independent Filmmakers Association of Moldova Alternative Cinema and the film production company ROVA FILM of Romania, with the assistance of the Romanian National Film Center, the Romanian Cultural Institute “Mihai Eminescu” in Chisinau, etc.
