Romanian diaspora can decide Romania's future
About 140,000 Romanian citizens voted at the 294 polling places set up abroad. The highest turnout of voters was in Italy, Spain and Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports.
More than 42,000 Romanians cast their ballots in Italy, 35,800 in Spain, and about 12,250 in Moldova. The turnout abroad can be considered high. In Moldova for example, the number of voters was by about 4,000 higher than in the first round of the presidential elections.
The vote of the diaspora makes up 1% of the total vote. If the difference in the votes polled by the candidates of the PDL and PSD is lower than one percent, the fate of the future president can be decided by the Romanians who voted abroad.
According to the spokesman for the Central Election Office, 57.94% of the voters made their choice in Romania on December 6, up about 4% compared with the first round. In urban areas, the turnout was 54.72%, while in rural areas – 60.11%.
Both of the candidates declared themselves winners yesterday evening. During the night, the PSD and PDL counted the votes in parallel and confirmed the victory of their own candidates in the morning - PSD: Geoana – 50.8%, Basescu – 49.2%; PDL: Basescu – 50.14%, Geoana – 49.86%.
The preliminary results show Traian Basescu won more votes in eastern Romania, while Mircea Geoana in western Romania. In Timis county for instance, Traian Basescu gained 59.11% of the vote, while Mircea Geoana – 40.88%. In Iasi and Bucharest, the situation is different.
According to the first official results announced by the Central Election Office at 8.00, Traian Basescu polled 50.43% of the vote, while Mircea Geoana – 49.57%.
