Romanian citizens will easier obtain compensations for property confiscated in Bessarabia during World War II
The Government of Romania modified the methodological norms regarding the allocation of recompense or compensation to the Romanian citizens whose property in Bessarabia, North Bucovina and Hertza Region was confiscated during the Second World War or after implementing the Paris Peace Treaty signed by Romania and the Allied Forces on February 10, 1947.
According to a press release from the Romanian Government cited by Info-Prim Neo, the methodological norms have been modified in order to adjust the present legislation to the Government’s reorganised working apparatus. Thus, the Service for Implementing the Law No. 290/2003 now works as part of the National Authorities for Property Restoration, which is a special legal body of the central public administration.
The Service has the following duties: to centralise the information coming from county commissions and the commissions of the municipality of Bucharest, to draw up documents for paying compensations and put up proposals over the payment of damages, to check the payment documents, to familiarise the county commissions and those of the municipality of Bucharest with the methodology etc.
The amendments were also made because the damage assessment procedure proved to be extremely difficult.
After the county commission makes a decision about the size of compensation, it will be considered by the central commission and then by the Ministry of Finance, which will allocate money to beneficiaries.
According to the Romanian Government, of the 18,000 applications registered with the Prefect’s Offices of the country, 3,000 have been examined. 70% of these were admitted and 30% rejected.
