Romania will offer €2m in assistance to Moldova to overcome drought consequences

The Romanian Government decided Tuesday to provide humanitarian aid worth 2 million euros to drought-hit Moldova. The assistance consists of food products – 3,000 tonnes of wheat flour, 400 tonnes of sugar, 10 tonnes of powder milk, 24 tonnes of canned meat, 16 tonnes of liver pate, and 40,000 litres of sunflower oil. Camelia Spataru, spokesperson for the Romanian Government, stated that the provision of the humanitarian aid shows Romania’s openness and willingness to contribute in a concrete manner to the international efforts of helping Moldova counter the effects of the drought. At the same time, the decision is consistent with the traditional policy of Romania to be open and receptive to the problems of Moldova, Camelia Spataru said. According to official estimates the losses caused by this year’s drought amount to 1 billion dollars. The Moldovan Government appealed for help to the international community to overcome the difficult situation, and several countries have already expressed their availability to help Moldova. So far, the assistance offered by Romania has been the largest.
