Romania to foster Romanian national identity in Moldova
Romania will continue to support Romanians, wherever they would be, to be proud of their successes and support them in preserving their national identity. This statement has been made by Romania’s President Traian Basescu in his speech on the occasion of receiving the members of the diplomatic corps at the Cotroceni Palace.
Especially in Moldova, “where they are a majority, it is our moral duty to promote the maintaining of the Romanian identity, with all legal means and financial, educational and cultural instruments held by the Romanian State”, Basescu stated.
He specified that he will facilitate the free circulation of persons with Romanian origins, especially the youth who wishes to study in Romania or settle down in the origin country “without deviating from the European requirements on the issue”.
Romania’s President added that he started this year with three visits to states where important communities of Romanians live: Ukraine, Moldova and Serb Republic. “I sought to assure them personally that the new status of Romania with EU membership would not create a second division line at out borders”.
President also said that Romania pleads for the “open doors policy”, this being a major factor for stimulating democratic reforms and economic development.
European neighbourhood policy is already a mechanism for promoting values and standards in the eastern zones and we intend to contribute to its development towards more firmness. In this sense, Basescu welcomed the intention of the incumbent presidency in Chisinau to follow that direction.
During his foreign policy speech, Basescu also mentioned that Romania plans to intensify trade with Moldova, Ukraine, South Caucasus, the Russian Federation, Central Asia States, Info-Prim Neo reports.
