Romania pleads for Moldova’s European integration together with Western Balkans countries
Romania remains a constant supporter of the idea that Moldova must be placed, in what concerns the European integration, near the countries of the Western Balkans, which have a closer European perspective compared with other countries of the region, President of Romania Traian Basescu stated after his meeting with Vladimir Voroin. The meeting took place in Chisinau on Tuesday, January 16. In this context, the Romanian President said he is glad that Voronin accepted Romania to support the inclusion of Moldova in the aforementioned group of countries.
The Romanian President mentioned that the discussions tackled another essential issue, namely the EU Neighbourhood Policy. “It is already known that EU offers EUR 123 mln to Romania, Moldova and Ukraine for projects related to its neighbourhood policy and Romania as a member country holds a position of great responsibility concerning the implementation of the projects”, Basescu mentioned. According to the Romanian President, there were discussed actions aimed at contributing to the “balanced partition of money within the regional cross-border projects”.
In his turn, Vladimir Voronin said that the presidents talked about the Political Agreement between Moldova and Romania. “We found common standpoints and in short time the agreement will be signed”, the President said. According to Voronin, both Moldova and Romania are the heirs of USSR borders, which remained unchanged. “The only thing to do is to consult the specialists in order to confirm this succession on the Moldovan-Romanian border”, the leader from Chisinau stated.
Voronin expressed his hope that thanks to Romania, Moldova would benefit from support in all the European institutions.
About 3 months ago, at the opening of the terminal from Giurgiulesti, Moldova’s President said that in the Middle Ages Moldova was a bigger country. “They took from the south and from the north. Now, someone wants to board us on their train to Europe and impose the name of our language, to say that our history is not ours”, Vladimir Voronin said.
