Romania, Moldova and Ukraine will work out management plan for the Danube Delta

This year Romania, Moldova and Ukraine, countries that are managing together the Danube Delta, will sign a Memorandum of Understanding for drawing up a plan on its management, Lucia Varga, Secretary of the State of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, stated according to Romanian press. “Romania’s priority is to strengthen the cooperation with the Danube river-side countries for management of the risk of inundation. The present protection system does not fully anticipate floods. That is why the Government took the decision to revise the protection system along the Danube River. In this respect there will be erected circular dams, polders and moist zones that will foster biodiversity conservation, Varga specified. The official said that the works intended for this project will start in 2008. Until then, feasibility studies are planned. Romania committed itself to attain three objectives regarding the management of the Danube River: improvement of water quality, management of the risk of inundations and cooperation at inter-basin level.
