More than 6,000 Moldovan voters with Romanian nationality took part in the referendum to amend the Constitution of Romania and redefine marriage that was held on October 6 and 7. The referendum was voided owing to the low voter turnout. Fewer than 4 million Romanians cast ballots at the plebiscite, according to the Central Electoral Bureau of Romanian, IPN reports.
A number of 35 polling places were established in Moldova for the referendum and over 6,000 persons voted at these. According to the Central Electoral Bureau, over 3,000 electors voted at the polling places available in Chisinau.
The proposed amendment would have changed the definition of family in Romania’s Constitution to make marriage a union between a man and a woman instead of between “spouses.”
The Central Electoral Bureau said that with 99.8% of the votes from polling places being centralized, the result is as follows: 3 525 238 (91.57% of those eligible) voted in favor of the amendment, while 248 696 (6.46%) voted against it. A number of 75 919 votes (1.97%) were invalidated.
The referendum needed a 30 percent turnout (over 5.4m people) to be valid.
