Romania is in favor of opening accession negotiations with Moldova in December

Romania supports the adoption of the decision to open accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine in December, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Luminița Odobescu stated in a seminar on the European Union and its enlargement policy, IPN reports.

The Romanian official presented Romania’s position of support for the EU enlargement policy, primarily in the current context with overlapping crises at regional and international levels. She noted that the enlargement process is a geostrategic investment for maintaining and developing peace, stability and prosperity in Europe, the shared democratic values.

Luminița Odobescu underlined that Romania supports the accelerated continuation of the enlargement of the EU based on the own merits of the candidates, in parallel with the internal institutional processes needed to prepare the Union for welcoming new members.

In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania said that Luminița Odobescu reiterated the support for the adoption of the decisions needed to open the accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, given the remarkable accomplishments of the two candidates which were recognized by the European Commission through its positive assessments published on November 8, 2023.

On November 8, the European Commission recommended opening accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine. A final decision on the opening of negotiations is to be taken at the European Council’s meeting on December 14-15.
