Moldova has received a donation of 55 tonnes of food and non-food products from Romania, which are intended for the Ukrainian refugees sheltered in the 96 placement centers opened in the country, IPN reports.
According to Social Protection Minister Marcel Spatari, Moldova faces an unprecedented challenge, providing shelter to about 100,000 refugees. There is a lot of pressure on local and central public authorities, on non-governmental organizations, on volunteers.
Aid is needed to provide refugees in placement centers with everything they need. By the decision of the Commission for Exceptional Situations, 21.3 million lei were allocated for the local public authorities to make purchases for the placement centers.
Adrian Dupu, State Secretary in the Romanian Government’s Department for Relations with Moldova, believes that what Moldova is doing for Ukrainians is a symbol of civilization and humanity. Romania appreciates Moldova’s support and mobilization in supporting people fleeing the war.
The 55 tonnes of humanitarian aid come in addition to the 17 tonnes that Romania sent two weeks ago to Chisinau. It included food and basic necessities “so that the refugees can have a stay in Moldova as comfortable as possible in the current conditions”.
Deputy Speaker Mihai Popșoi said that Moldova is grateful to Romania for coming to the rescue every time. Material support is extremely useful, as is the political support reflected in the visit to Chisinau by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca.
