A consignment of 1,250 tonnes of fuel oil donated by Romania arrived in Moldova. This is the first lot of the 5,000 tonnes of fuel oil offered free to the country to help it maintain energy security, IPN reports.
“In these difficult times, the generous, fast and direct reaction of Romania shows that the neighboring country is more than a real friend of the Republic of Moldova. We are grateful to the Government of Romania for the fuel donated to help us swiftly manage the flow of refugees and to ensure the Republic of Moldova’s energy security,” Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița stated in the fuel handover event.
She noted that the Republic of Moldova had managed an enormous inflow of refugees – over 370,000 Ukrainians entered the country and about 100,000 of them chose to stay in Moldova.
“We wouldn’t have coped with such a great flow alone. Romania stands by us and helps us so that the Ukrainian refugees who want to go further, to European Union member states, could cross the Republic of Moldova faster. We also have direct buses that go from border crossing points to Romania. From this very platform, the Chisinau-Iasi train departs and takes refugees to EU countries,” stated Natalia Gavrilița.
She noted that Romania’s friendship and solidarity are highly appreciated by the Moldovan citizens, while the executive, with the support of the Romanian side, will continue making effort for the people to feel safe. Fuel prices grew considerably and the donated fuel oil will help Moldova have options to ensure fuel and heat for the Moldovan citizens.
Romanian’s Ambassador in Chisinau Daniel Ioniță reiterated Romania’s commitments to contribute by concrete actions to ensuring the energy security of the Republic of Moldova. “The fuel oil to the value of €3.5 million is intended for thermoelectric stations of the Republic of Moldova, while the main beneficiaries are the citizens of this country. Romania and the European Union show by deeds that they stand by you,” stated the diplomat.
The other lots of fuel oil donated to Moldova will be shipped during the next few weeks.
