Romania does not sign illegal documents, Marius Lazurca

Romania’s Ambassador in Chisinau Marius Lazurca, in a news conference on Thursday, said that Romania does not sign illegal documents, Info-Prim Neo reports. The diplomat was asked by reporters to comment on the statements made by Moldova’s Acting President Mihai Ghimpu, according to which the Treaty on the State Border Regime, Mutual Cooperation and Assistance in Frontier-Related Issues between Romania and Moldova is not constitutional. Marius Lazurca said he is not entitled to comment on such statements, but stressed that Romania does not sign illegal documents. In a press briefing, Mihai Ghimpu said that Prime Minister Vlad Filat violated the Constitution when he signed the Border Treaty between Moldova and Romania. He stated the Premier can sign agreements between Governments, not yet between countries. Only the head of state or the person entrusted with such powers can do it, he said. In reply, Vlad Filat said the assertions about the country's interests should be well thought out, especially if they are made by persons holding high-ranking posts. Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi was quoted by Mediafax as saying that the Border Treaty signed by Romania and Moldova is perfectly valid, underlining that the Moldovan partners should clarify this internal dispute. The Border Treaty was signed by Vlad Filat and Teodor Baconschi in Bucharest on November 8.
