Romania Day congrats met with booing by Communist MPs
When the parliamentary faction of the Liberal Party expressed congratulations on Romania's National Day at today's Parliament sitting, the Communist faction reacted with booing and foot-stomping for several minutes, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“I wish all Bessarabians to recognize Eminescu's axiom: {We are Romanians. Period.} Happy birthday, Romania!”, declared Liberal MP Maria Ciobanu.
“We are Moldovans and not Romanians. We are in Parliament and not in Romania's Senate, and the Liberals' statements are against our statehood and show no respect for this country”, reacted Communist MP Eduard Musuc.
Inna Supac, another Communist deputy, announced that the Communist faction submitted a motion against the rehabilitation and lionization of Nazi criminals and their allies, hinting at Romania's choice of sides in WWII and at the notorious Romanian Marshal Ion Antonescu, who is celebrated by some for his attempt to recover Bessarabia and Bukovina from Soviet occupation.
And while Speaker Marian Lupu attempted to call the assembly to order, the Liberals and the Communists went on to exchange vitriolic remarks.
“I've come to the conclusion, over and over, that stupidity has no limits. Today we've come to see it enter Parliament”, declared Liberal faction leader Ion Hadirca.
Liberal Party president Mihai Ghimpu stated that the Communists should understand that when congratulating Germany on its national holiday one doesn't celebrate Nazism, suggesting the same is true of Romania.
December 1, celebrated by Romania also as the Great Union Day, commemorates the unification of Transylvania with Romania on 1 December 1918, after earlier that year, on 27 March 1918, the legislature of Bessarabia voted to join Romania as well.
