Roman Mihaes: Romania should put forward union offer

The political union of Moldova and Romania based on a referendum held simultaneously in the two states is one of the priorities of the aspirant for the office of President Roman Mihaes. In a news conference at IPN, he said the referendum can be initiated only if the Romanian state comes up with a union offer.

Roman Mihaes noted that Moldova and Romania are two Romanian states. Romania recognized Moldova’s independence in 1991 and now is its main advocate on the path of European integration and modernization. “I call on all the unionists to ask for a Union offer from the Parliament, Government and President of Romania to the institutions of the Republic of Moldova. Or else, all the discussions are populist and have no other purpose than to accumulate electoral points or gain possessions,” he stated.

The candidate believes that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova have the right to ask for a referendum on the union theme. “If 50% +1 of those written on the electoral rolls support the Union, this should be considered the people’s will,” he stated.

Speaking about other aspects that bother him, Roman Mihaes said the Labor Code should be amended by introducing a working norm of six hours a day or 30 hours a week. He also pleaded for modifying the Election Code so that Parliament is chosen equally based on party lists and in uninominal constituencies.

Roman Mihaes submitted a challenge to the president of the Central Election Commission Alina Russu where he says that the obligation to present at least 15,000 signatures collected from supporters from at least half of the territorial-administrative units of the second level is unconstitutional. According to him, the 15,000 signatures must be collected from people who want to support the candidates, no matter where they live.

He also asked the CEC and the Broadcasting Coordination Council to pay attention to the news bulletins of Jurnal TV, where the aspirant for President Andrei Nastase prevails, and to the statements of the Socialist leader Igor Dodon, who disseminates leaflets entitled “Romanian gendarmerie will not be a master in our country”.
