Roberta Metsola: Europa is and will remain by Moldova

The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said Europe is and will remain by the Republic of Moldova and its citizens. “We will be strong and united in our convictions, including when it goes to the energy sector,” the official stated in a news conference given jointly with President Maia Sandu on Friday, IPN reports.

Roberta Metsola said the European Union will continue to help Moldova diversify its energy supplies to prevent further destabilization. The EU Member States have already facilitated new interconnections. “When we speak about the economic situation, this is difficult but we offered support and will continue to offer support in the form of financial resources and by intensifying transport connections and commercial exchanges,” noted the European official.

“In the name of the European Parliament, I want to assure you that we are ready to do more, to move even faster than in the past and not only because there is political will but also because we are an institution that went hand in hand with your country, offering full support,” stated Roberta Metsola. “Moldova’s place is in Europe. Our future must be together and the European Parliament will do everything necessary to stand with you.”

For her part, President Sandu said the European Parliament for her and her mates that aim to bring about changes has been a symbol of European democracy by which they abide. The European Parliament has stood by Moldova in the most difficult times for the fragile Moldovan democracy. It was the first EU institution to call for Moldova to receive EU candidate status.

The official noted that the Republic of Moldova chose the accession to the EU as a path to freedom, prosperity and peace, which will necessitate a lot of work, coordination and goodwill. “Today, in the name of our citizens who want to live in peace and prosperity and to decide the future themselves, I thank you for the chance to become part of the European family offered to us,” stated Maia Sandu, noting the European Parliament’s support was vital for keeping Moldova on the democratic path and for supporting its European aspirations.

As during President Sandu’s meeting with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday, the Shor Party staged a protest in the square of the National Opera House “Maria Bieșu” today as well. The protesters demanded again that the government should resign, accusing it of dictatorship and of not dealing with citizens’ problems. They said the European officials come to visit Moldova but meet only with representatives of the government and ignore the opposition.
