Robert Corker: U.S. pleads for Moldova to become part of EU

The Unites State pleads for Moldova to become part of the EU. Moldova will continue to benefit from the U.S.’s support for development, Senator Robert Corker said in a meeting with Head of Parliament Igor Corman, IPN reports, quoting the Parliament’s press service.

Senator Corker encouraged the Moldovan authorities to continue the changes aimed at democratizing the country, saying the progress made is visible.

For his part, Igor Corman said that Moldova’s objectives are to maintain political stability and to strengthen the social cohesion so that the country signs and ratifies the Association Agreement within the current legislature. He underlined the importance of informing the population, in an accessible language, about the benefits of joining the EU.

The U.S official also had a meeting with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca. He said that this visit is very important because 2014 is a crucial year for Moldova. He expressed his gratitude to the Unites States for the support offered in implementing changes in Moldova, including in such areas as the justice sector reform, the fight against corruption, the economic development and the democratization of society.

Iurie Leanca voiced hope that Moldova will enter the list of countries-beneficiaries for the second MCC Compact program.

Senator Robert Corker, who is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has visited Moldova for the first time.
