A gang of four men got heavy prison sentences after being found guilty of a series of robberies targeting seniors in the northern part of the country. In one case, a 91-year-old victim was beaten to death.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said in a press release that the robbers, ages 26 to 32, would pick victims older than 80. They are said to have acted ruthlessly. In one case, a 91-year-old man who refused to give them what they wanted was kicked and punched to death. The burglars then burned down the victim’s house.
The gang would use masks and gloves, and would cut their victims’ homes off of communications before breaking in. They weren’t above targeting elderly people for as little as 2,000 lei.
The suspects had pleaded not guilty during the trial and were eventually given sentences ranging from 21 years to life terms.
