Road workers and carriers oppose idea of municipal road fund
The Union of Carriers and Road Workers and the Federation of Carriers and Road Workers issued a press release to criticize as unfair Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca's initiative to create a road fund from contributions paid by drivers, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The measure, according to them, would amount to double imposition of legally employed people. And instead of creating such a road fund, they suggest, the municipal authorities should rather address the root of the problem – unregulated and unauthorized business – which is the reason why the city's coffers get so little money for road works and repair.
“We should stress that unauthorized passenger transportation causes the budget to lose 200 million lei annually”, state the signatories, demanding that both central and municipal authorities take steps to combat unregulated economy.
Earlier Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca proposed the introduction of a supplementary road tax to repair roads in the city.
