Road legislation violations will be more severely punished

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice will work on a bill to amend the Contravention Code and the Criminal Code, so that punishment for certain violations of the road legislation will be harsher. The announcement was made by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ianuș Erhan, after a meeting of the National Council for Road Traffic Safety.

According to the secretary of state, the penalties for exceeding the speed limit and for driving under the influence will rise. "Proposals regarding the confiscation of the means of transport used by motorists that drive under the influence have been put into discussion. The public will be consulted in regard to this measure", said the secretary of state.

Ianuș Erhan claimed that the MAI will continue the "White Nights", "Speed", "Traffic light" and "Pedestrian" operations. Additionally, companies that provide technical testing services will be verified. During the meeting, the proposal to publicize the list of drivers who systematically violate road legislation was generated.

The secretary of state of MAI urged the citizens to notify the police if they see that their acquaintances or family members are driving under the influence.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Research will establish mandatory road safety lessons in schools, with the involvement of representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Over the course of the first nine months of this year, there were over 1800 road accidents resulting in 185 casualties.
