Road accidents claimed about 200 lives in Moldova this year
Approximately 200 persons have been killed in traffic accidents in Moldova since the start of this year. In a news conference on August 12, the head of the Ministry of the Interior’s Traffic Police Division Gheorghe Botnariuc said a large part of this accidents happened in Chisinau. Driving under the influence and speeding are the main causes of fatal road accidents.
Gheorghe Botnariuc said the children in summer are on vacation and can play in dangerous places when left without supervision. Therefore, the risk of children being involved in traffic accidents is increasing in the period. “As many as 130 road accidents involving children have occurred during the last two months alone,” the official said. The Road Safety course was introduced in schools as optional in order to avoid such accidents.
Botnariuc said approaches have been made to review the traffic management scheme in the municipality of Chisinau so as to ease traffic congestion. There was set up the National Council on Road Safely headed by Prime Minister Vlad Filat and drawn up a plan to deal with road safety problems.
