River levels peaked at Nistru and Prut dams
Following heavy rains over the past weekend, water levels have approached their maximum at the dams in Costesti-Stanca on the Prut and in Dubasari on the Nistru, posing a real threat to a number of communities downstream.
A spokesperson for the Civil Protection Service has told Info-Prim Neo that Tuesday early morning a mass evacuation started in villages in the districts of Rascani, Falesti, and Glodeni. Zones deemed at risk are the districts of Hancesti, Leova, Cantemir, and Kamenka. As many as 3,718 persons have been displaced this night.
With roads, homes, dachas, and crop fields being flooded just some 20 kilometers from Moldova's capital Chisinau, significant forces from rescuers, to police, to volunteers have been marshaled to help people drain their houses and save cattle. The situation is changing in a matter of hours.
