Of the over 13,800 women diagnosed with COVID-19, slightly more than 200 are pregnant. Pregnant women can become infected regardless of the stage of pregnancy and the forms of gravity are different. Everything depends on the impact of the virus. Hypoxia developed as a result of infection with the novel coronavirus is one of the dangers that impacts also the fetus.
Contacted by IPN for details, director of Municipal Maternity Hospital No. 2 Tatiana Gutium said the institution was assigned to deal with pregnant women infected with the novel coronavirus in March. They are now treating 34 pregnant women confirmed with the virus, which is a constant, stable and high figure.
In case of pregnant women, the treatment is not specific. It is antiviral treatment. If the woman’s state of health permits, the doctors try not to administer antiviral drugs immediately, taking into account immunosuppression in pregnant women and the state of the immune system. In some of the cases, the situation is difficult both for doctors and patients.
Hypoxia generated by the coronavirus can have an impact on the woman and fetus. There were cases when the children were born with pneumonia.
COVID-19 was detected in women in different stages of pregnancy. The infection in the first trimester is rather dangerous as organogenesis occurs during the first weeks and the infection implies a big virulent attack. In the case of a big virulent attack in the fifth-seventh week, with cough and fever, the pregnancy can be lost or become stagnant.
There are cases when the pregnant women stay at home as they don’t think they contracted the novel coronavirus and get to the hospital when their state is medium grave or even grave. There are also asymptomatic pregnant women who have suspicions only. It is better for them to be hospitalized as their state of health, including related to respiration, can worsen during the night.
When infected pregnant women give birth, the child is tested for the presence of the coronavirus. There were cases when the child got the virus. These women are not discharged from the hospital in three days. Doctors abide by the national and international protocols.
The medical personnel in maternity hospitals all their life work with double responsibility, for the mother and the fetus. During the pandemic, the responsibility trebled.
Tatiana Gutium called on the pregnant women to also show responsibility so as to prevent the spread of the virus.
By July 28, Moldova has got 23,500 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The death toll from COVID-19 stands at 753. As many as 16,462 infected persons got cured.
