Risk of floods is minimal, but 100 km of levees need to be reinforced

The latest heavy rain does not pose a threat of floods, but the authorities say that about 100 km of levees must be reinforced immediately. The issue was discussed in a meeting of the commission for emergencies that was called by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca on June 8, IPN reports.

The meeting was held behind closed doors. The first vice director of the State Hydrometeorology Service Elina Plesca said after the meeting that the level of water in the Danube will be rising throughout next week. But the risk of floods in Moldova will be low if the volumes of water released from the accumulation lakes are small. The level of water in the Nistru is constant, while on the Prut the situation is influenced by the quantities released from the Costesti-Stanca lake.

According to Elina Plesca, there will be no precipitation the comings days, but rain will return next Tuesday, June 11, and will last until June 16. A new pause will follow until June 20. June will be rainier than July and August.

Prime Minister Iurie Leanca told the journalists that though the risk of floods is low, the competent institutions must be on alert as more precipitation will follow. “I think it’s not normal for the state to cover all the losses when levees burst and lakes and ponds flood,” he said, suggesting that the people should become involved in reinforcing the levees and should make sure that their property is safe.

According to the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, the rain and winds of June 7 caused damage in Sadaclia village of Basarabeasca district. The roof of the local kindergarten was destroyed on an area of 184 square meters. A number of windows were broken. The roofs of eleven houses were also partially damaged.
