Children born within the territory of the Republic of Moldova will have their right to citizenship guaranteed. An amendment to this effect was approved in the first reading today.

In particular, the amendment abolishes the provision which stated that children born within the territory of the country can obtain the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova only if at the time of birth at least one of the parents has the right of residence, benefits from international protection or is recognized as stateless by the competent authorities.

According to the sponsors, the amendment aims to achieve compliance with the provisions of the UN Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons, the UN Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
