Social discrimination is the most frequent form of discrimination among students who make a difference between the students from well-off families and socially deprived families. In many cases, the children from families on high incomes ignore their fellows from poor families. The phenomenon was discussed in a seminar organized by the Chisinau General Division of Education, Youth and Sport, Info-Prim Neo reports. Alexandra Tanase, a teacher of Romanian language and literature at the Theoretical High School “Gaudeamus”, said that in her 40 years of teaching she saw that social discrimination prevails at school. Another form of discrimination appears between students from urban areas and those from rural areas. Alexandra Tanase said she experienced such a situation in the class where she is a form master and had to ask the school psychologist to intervene. Tatiana Caraman, deputy head of the Vocational School No. 9, said the same form of discrimination prevails in their school. There is also discrimination between the students of different religions. The students often do not want to communicate with fellows of other religions. Carolina Dudu-Savca, department chair at the State Institute of International Relations, said that the discrimination among university students is not so evident. “I think the students are generally more tolerant. The environment in universities is more liberal that in schools. The students have more democratic views because they are older and have an opinion,” she stated. According to the teachers, everyone should realize that all the people are equal and the problem of discrimination will then disappear. The teachers consider that the students’ attitude towards and tolerance of their fellows must be cultivated by their parents and then by teachers. The training seminar “Vision of a tolerant family, school and society – how to prevent discrimination?” forms part of the education program “Pestalozzi” that was launched in Strasbourg. Its aim is to develop teachers’ knowledge and skills as regards tolerant education and understanding so as to avoid discrimination in classrooms.
