Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact should not become a weapon in internal political fights, PDM

“The secret protocol to the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact is invalid from legal viewpoint and should not be used as a weapon in the internal political fights to divide society into “ours” and “theirs”. History must not be discussed on the barricades,” the Democratic Party (PDM) says in a statement issued on the occasion of 71 years of the signing of the Pact. According to the statement, the defeat of the fascism in the Second World War and the signing by the USSR and Romania of bilateral agreements on the results of the war deprived the Pact of 1939 of practical importance. At the same time, the proclamation of Moldova's independence in August 1991 eliminated all the consequences of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact for the Moldovan people. “We, the citizens of Moldova, must know our history. Each of us should have a position on the dramatic events from our common historical past. A civilized dialogue based on arguments should be promoted in society. Emphasis should be laid on reaching social consensus on the European aspirations that unite us all,” reads the statement. The Democratic Party says the political changes that took place after July 29, 2009 gave the Moldovan people the chance of seeing Moldova becoming a true state of law. It calls on all the people to join efforts and contribute to achieving this major goal.
