Results of negotiations: PLDM and PDM claim post of Premier

In the first round of negotiations held after the attempt to invest the Sturza Government failed, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Democratic Party claimed the post of Prime Minister. The PLDM is to take a decision as to the further steps inside the party, while the PDM is waiting for the decision of the Lib-Dems. Such statements were made by the leaders of the parties after the January 5 talks, IPN reports.

The acting chairman of the PLDM Valeriu Strelet said the candidate for premiership should present a clear view for overcoming the difficulties. The PLDM considers the right to designate the candidate should belong to it because there is now no result of recent parliamentary elections and they must ensure continuity. The PLDM could field a politically unaffiliated candidate, with a consistent and constructive program and attitude that will offset the delay in implementing the Association Agreement with the EU.

Strelet noted that the PDM insists it is represented by 35 MPs in Parliament and thus claims the right to suggest a candidate for Prime Minister. “The PLDM will convoke its executive bodies and will take a decision,” he stated.

The leader of the PDM Marian Lupu said his party didn’t change its position and insists on fielding the candidate for Premier because its parliamentary group de facto consists of 20 members and is the largest pro-European group.

Marian Lupu reminded that the Democratic MPs and 14 former Communist MPs signed a statement to create the Social-Democratic Platform and he thus speaks in the name of 35 MPs, which is more than one third. “From all the viewpoints, the PDM is entitled to take over this post. We are waiting for the decision of the PLDM. The only request is for this decision to be taken swiftly as we do not have much time,” he stated.

The Liberals’ leader Mihai Ghimpu said it seems to him that some like when the people live in misery and poverty as they don’t hurry to take a decision. “We earlier lost one month and then lost two weeks with a candidate that was unable to secure the necessary number of votes and this was clear from the start. Now we met again and have to wait for the meeting of the PLDM’s Council. It seems that they again stall for time so that we reached early elections. We, the Liberals, are not afraid of early elections. We are concerned about the future of this people and this state,” he noted.

The three politicians didn’t say when a new round of talks will take place.
