Results in banking sector show stability, central bank governor
The results achieved by the banks in the firs half of the year confirm the stability of the system, said the governor of the National Bank of Moldova Dorin Dragutanu. The banks’ capitalization is over 31% at a time when the necessary minimum is 12%, while the liquidity is slightly under 30%, with the necessary minimum being 20%. The liquidity is decreasing and this shows that the banks raise the volume of loans granted to the economy,” the governor said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
According to Dorin Dragutanu, all the indicators have improved. The banks’ profitability has increased by 300% compared with the same period last year. “The stability of the banks is important not only for the people who opened bank accounts, but also for those who do not yet have savings. A stable banking system represents social safety,” the governor stressed.
The share of delinquent loans in the total number of loans released by banks has stabilized. “The share of delinquent loans in 2009 doubled from a year earlier. In the second half of last year, the banks started to realize that they encounter problems related to the loan portfolio. Last yearend, the delinquent loans made up 16.4%, as against about 17.4% at present,” Dorin Dragutanu said.
“We hope the economic recovery will allow the companies to return to the loan repayment schedules agreed with the banks. On the other hand, the rise in the number of new loans granted to the economy in the first half of this year, which was twice higher than in the same period last year, will lead to a reduction in the share of delinquent loans. Though there is no direct connection between the volume of delinquent loans and the interest rate on loans, the low number of such loans means fewer risks and the interest rates are thus decreased.”
