Restrictions on import of meat and meat products annulled

The Government abrogated a decision that allowed importing meat and meat products under quotas and with authorizations from the Ministry of Economy, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the initiators of the abrogation, the studies carried out by the current Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry and by independent experts show that the authorization of the import of meat under quotas is in fact not a method of protecting the national producers, but a measure allowing several companies loyal to the former government to monopolize the market. Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Valeriu Cosarciuc said they are now working out mechanisms for protecting the national meat producers and the home market. Among the considered measures are the limitation of the profit margin to 20%, analysis of the prices of the imported products at the customs, increasing the special taxes on meat and meat products from 100-200 euros per tonne to 200-400 euros per tonne, implementation of the technical regulations concerning the production and sale of meat and meat products. Cosarciuc also said that the national producers now satisfy 85% of the internal necessities of meat and meat products. After the 2007 drought, which determined the culling of many animals and birds, the situation in the animal breeding sector during the last two years has improved. The production of poultry in 2009 increased by 16.2% on 2006, while of pork – by 11.7%.
