Responsibility for discovering truth about April 7, 2009 events swings between Ministry of Interior and Prosecutor's Office, Alexandru Tanase

The discovery of the truth about the April 7, 2009 events is a ping-pong of responsibilities between the Ministry of the Interior and the Prosecutor General's Office, Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase said in a special meeting of the Human Rights Club held on the occasion of two years of the April 2009 events, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Nothing has changed. On April 6 and 7, they discuss those events intensely, but forget about them on April 8. No person was sentenced. We do not yet know what happened and who was to blame for those events,” said Alexandru Tanase. According to the minister, the then events gave the young people a shock. Immediately after the protests, they had been hunted by the police throughout Chisinau. “If those to blame will not be punished, we risk facing similar situations in the future. We proclaimed independence from a state that had KGB and a Soviet army and there was clarity in the events that happened between 1989 and 1991. However, we cannot establish what happened during 3-4 days in April 2009, when the events were filmed and broadcast live all over the world.,” said Alexandru Tanase. “I was taken to the police station for questioning from the street. I was beaten there. I filed a complaint, but not much was done to solve my case,” said Sergiu Cretu, one of the maltreated young persons. “The police officers who tortured the protesters should be suspended, but they continue to work. The April 7 protests represented an answer to what had happened in Moldova during many years.” Iurie Maximov, deputy head of the Ministry of the Interior's Investigations and Internal Security Division, said that a number of remand centers were closed after April 7, 2009 owing to the unsatisfactory detention conditions there. The Ministry created a commission that makes sure that the materials asked for reach the prosecutors. About 300 young people were maltreated in police stations after the April 2009 protests. Two police officers have been so far convicted of misuse of power. More than 100 legal cases over those events are being examined in courts.
